Is it hard to find Cloud professionals in Singapore right now? 

Yes. The past few years have accelerated many organisations’ switch to Cloud Computing, but the market currently lacks a structured educational path (such as university degrees or diplomas) for budding Cloud professionals. This means demand – and competition – for Cloud professionals in all sectors and industries is very high. That’s where we come in.  

What should I look for in a Cloud professional when hiring? 

Generally speaking, find out the level of experience the candidate has with your organisation’s technology stack, and try to get a thorough understanding of the projects they were involved in and to what extent. Look for practical skills in AWS, Azure or public Cloud skills, plus at least a few years of first-hand experience working in multi or hybrid Cloud environments. 
Soft skills are what really separates Cloud and DevOps professionals who will really take your business to new heights: the ability to manage technical teams, but also to communicate challenges and solutions to senior stakeholders in both technical and non-technical disciplines. You will also want someone who demonstrates proactiveness and is a fit for your organisation’s culture.  
These aside, don’t forget to also assess for culture fit and proactiveness. 

How can I assess a Cloud professional to make sure I hire the right person? 

The first priority is to identify if they are technical or strategic Cloud professionals and ensure the candidate you have fits your company’s infrastructure and growth roadmap.  
During the interview, ask relevant questions on project experience to assess their level of hands-on experience. Interviews are also when you want to assess your candidate’s soft skills – make it conversational and ask about challenges they have overcome, solutions they have implemented and how these experiences may be transferable to your organisation. 
For more senior or leadership/management roles, you’ll want to make sure that the candidate’s career goals are aligned with the job scope too.
