Your Cloud Computing job questions, answered

Is demand high for Cloud skills?

Yes, extremely! Demand for experienced Cloud professionals has soared in recent months, way above the supply of high-calibre candidates. With more organisations switching to remote and hybrid working and migrating from on-prem to cloud and serverless environments, Cloud professionals now play a critical role in organisation-wide digital transformation plans.

Migration experience with the three major players – AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure – are a safe bet for securing a new job, as well as having experience in related areas such as Cyber Security, DevOps and database and programming language skills.

What is the average salary for a Cloud specialist in Singapore?

While exact packages would be dependent on location, you can expect typical salaries to average between SGD $60-200K.

You can use the Hays Salary Checker to learn more about typical earnings as a Cloud professional in Singapore and benchmark your current salary.

What skills will help me progress my career in Cloud?

Traditional infrastructure skills are a good foundation. Cyber Security experience is useful, as organisations look to mitigate risk to new operating models. A CCSP certification can help if you’re interested in specialising in this area.

Database and programming language skills will also give you an edge. As the storage and management of cloud data continues to be a priority, database language skills such as SQL, MySQL and Hadoop will be critical, as is hands-on experience with AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, AliCloud, and Tencent Cloud.

Finally, those with strong DevOps engineering skills are in high demand. It’s important to have an in-depth and provable understanding of developer and testing practices, and you should also be able to work in a team in a collaborative, agile way.

What certifications are important when working in Cloud?

This depends on what platform you’re working with. The three main players have extensive learning programmes to validate your expertise. For AWS, the foundation certificate is the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner. The AliCloud counterpart to that would be ACP certifications. Microsoft Azure also has a number of certifications split broadly into three levels – Fundamental Level, Associate Level and Expert Level, while Google Cloud has its own training platform with Associate and Professional level certifications.

After completing that, you can choose to take additional levels of certification, which are available for associate level and professional level in architecture, development and operations. You can also look at taking specialty certifications in areas like Big Data and advanced networking.
